Taking Dead Aim At Pinehurst’s “The Cradle”

There are two places on planet Earth that the moment I darken the city limits, ALL stresses in my life disappear:  Hilton Head, SC, and The Village of Pinehurst.  WAIT!  I know what you're thinking.

"Wow, big surprise...golf freak Charlie loves Pinehurst."

It's more than that.  The laid-back vibe of the town and people there is intoxicating.  Everyone is happy to see you and lives with perpetual smiles on their faces.

And, I'm not gonna lie, the golf is great, historically great.

That being said, golf has long fought a reputation of being an exlusionary sport.  It has as reputation (well earned) as being too expensive and too hard.  As a result, "growing" the game, getting new people/kids interested is a huge challenge.

That's where Pinehurst has come in.  A couple of years ago they set about to build a nine hole "short course."  How short?  At 780 yards, it's roughly the distance of two normal golf holes.  Consequently, what has resulted is some of the most fun I've ever had playing the game.  Oh, and you only need a couple of clubs and one ball to play.  Honestly, I think the next person to lose a ball on "The Cradle" will be the first.

"The Cradle" (Pinehurst is nicknamed "The Cradle of American Golf") is open and inviting to people of all ages and skill levels.  One of the things I see EVERY time I'm there is moms and dads and their kids playing together.  Some swinging a club for the first time.  And EVERYONE having a blast.

In the last year they've added piped in music (little pop, little rock, little country...kinda like the music on your phone), and "The Pine Cone," a mobile refreshement unit (ie food truck for drinks and snacks).

The atmosphere reminded me last weekend of the kinds of backyard fun we used to have.  I mean, how many times have you played croquet or volleyball and had no idea what you were doing...and had a great time?

Every time, right?

THAT'S the magic of "The Cradle."  Regardless of your skill level (even if it's NONE), you're going to have a great time.  Think I'm wrong?
