Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was shot on Sunday night in his native Dominican Republic.

“Big Papi” was ambushed by a male who jumped off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at close range at Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo around 8:50 p.m., reports USA Today.

The baseball star was taken to the Abel Gonzalez clinic, where he had surgery and was in stable condition, according to the Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte.

“He is out of surgery and stable; he is resting. ‘Big Papi’ will be around for a long time,” David Ortiz’s father, Leo Ortiz said, according to 98.5 The Sports Hub.

A crowd of people at the bar stopped the alleged gunman and beat him, according to Almonte.

The Dominican National Police Director also said that the police are waiting until the alleged gunman undergoes treatment for his injuries before questioning him.

Investigators are attempting to determine whether “Big Papi” was the intended target. Almonte said that two others were also wounded in the shooting, including Jhoel Lopez, a Dominican TV host, who was with the baseball star at the time.

Police think that Lopez was wounded by the same bullet as Ortiz, according to Almonte. Lopez’s injuries weren’t life-threatening, as he was shot in the leg. The third person who was shot hasn’t been identified.
