Bernardo Silva named Player of the Tournament USWNT begin WC Title Defense.
For the second time in four years, the Portuguese National team has added a championship to the trophy case, from a major European tournament. In 2016 it was the European Championship and in 2019 it was the new UEFA Nations League. The Navigators lifted the first Nations League trophy in their home country after defeating the Netherlands by a score of 1-0. In what was a very ho-hum first half, many believed that the championship would go to penalties to crown a winner.
Goncalo Guedes made sure that did not happen as he was able to sneak the ball under the outstretched arm of Jasper Cillessen in the 60thminute. Playing at the home of Portugal powerhouse Porto, Ronaldo & Co. let all of Europe know that they are still a force to be reckoned with, especially since Euro 2020 fast approaching.
Speaking of title defenses, the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicked off this past Friday. The host, and tournament favorites, France had no problems with South Korea, as they would cruise to an easy 4-0 victory. Reigning champs, the USA, won’t see action until this Tuesday when they kick off against Thailand at the Stade Auguste Delaune II at 3 pm. With Sweden, Chile, and Thailand joining the USWNT in Group F, the Yanks should have no problem advancing to the knockout rounds.
