There’s No Crying in Baseball, but There Sure Are Robots
Major League Baseball officials have come up with a plan to test their new robotic umpires.
The “automated ball-strike system” will be given a trial run in the Arizona Fall League this season, MLB revealed Friday. It will be used at Salt River Fields, home of the Salt River Rafters and Scottsdale Scorpions. “We are continuing to test the automated ball-strike system in the Arizona Fall League, which will be a valuable opportunity to solicit feedback from umpires, players and coaches,” says the league’s Morgan Sword.
If this test proves to be a success, MLB officials will consider whether to begin using the system. This will assist umpires, not replace them, during major league games.
