CHARLOTTE, NC - OCTOBER 15: Quarterback Hasaan Klugh #16 of the Charlotte 49ers runs a keeper against the FIU Golden Panthers on October 15, 2016 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In the first year of the Will Healy era, the Charlotte 49ers are making their first appearance ever in a bowl game.

The 49ers will face off against the Buffalo Bulls in the Bahamas Bowl. The game will take place on December 20th at 2 p.m.

Charlotte has faced a lot of diversity in their short time of having a college football team. Since joining Conference USA in their first season as a program in 2015, Charlotte has never won more than 5 games in a season.

After letting Brad Lambert walk after last season, it took some time to find a new head coach. Originally, the ‘Niners called upon another head coach, who then took a job somewhere else; but everything happens for a reason. As a member of the 49er family, I cannot express enough how grateful we are to have Coach Healy lead the way for this team.

Even in games without their top running back, the 49ers were able to find ways to win games. Benny Lemay, who also is in contention for best running back in the conference, has missed a couple of games this year due to a shoulder injury. In only 180 attempts this season, Lemay reached the thousand rushing yard milestone for the second straight season. The Matthews, N.C. native is certainly one of the biggest reasons that Charlotte will be seeing a bowl game for the first time this year.

Lemay is not the only reason for the team’s success though. Chris Reynolds, the sophomore quarterback has played a big part in the ‘Niners campaign as well. Reynolds has the ability to both run the ball and air it out, making him a dual-threat to the opposing defense. Reynolds has thrown for over 2,300 yards and 21 touchdowns, earning the spot as the starting quarterback. So far in his career, Reynolds has a QBR of 69.7. Look for these number to grow as Charlotte becomes an overall better team.

After winning their last five games, Charlotte will be coming into the Bahamas Bowl with a hot hand.
