Todd Gurley got fired… ON HIS DAY OFF! In an offseason where there’s been so many twists and turns, another surprising move occurred when the Rams decided to cut All-Pro running back, Todd Gurley.
Gurley has been one of the best backs in the NFL in his 5 seasons. He was the offensive rookie of the year in 2015. And after a tough 2016, he bounced back in a big way, earning All-Pro honors in 2017 and 2018. Leading the NFL in touchdowns both seasons and even led the league in yards from scrimmage in 2017 with nearly 2100 yards.
Last season we saw Gurley start on a slight decline. Many people question whether or not the knee that bothered him since his major knee injury at Georgia, can hold up. At just 25 years old, why not take a chance on a tailback who could possibly return to that 2017-2018 form?
Even though Todd Gurley is a Carolina boy, he played his college ball at UGA so it’s not a total surprise that he signed with the Falcons. Many figured it would be either Atlanta or Tampa Bay. After cutting Devonta Freeman, the Falcons had a glaring hole at running back and aside from Ito Smith, there wasn’t much to choose from on the roster.
Taking a chance on Gurley with a one-year deal is a smart move for a team that has some of the pieces necessary to make a run at the playoffs. With injuries mounting the past few seasons and that very real Super Bowl hangover, the Falcons have not played inspired football. If the Falcons can stay healthy on defense, they could compete with the Saints and Bucs for the NFC South title.
Do you think this move pushes the Falcons into playoff contention?
