U.S. Still Planning To Send Olympic Team To Tokyo
Written by Phil Harris of WKQC
Whether or not the Olympic Summer Games happen this year remains to be seen. As a fan of the Olympics, I was disappointed when the pandemic derailed the 2020 games in Tokyo. The organizers are intent on proceeding with the event this July. The head of Japan’s Olympic organizing body says holding the games without spectators is an option.
According to Kyodo News, the U.S. is still planning to send its team to Tokyo this summer. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki says there are no discussions to pull out of the Olympics amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The Biden administration is not currently talking about changing the U.S. position. Psaki says they will continue to consult closely with allies and partners at all levels, but the plan right now is to send U.S. athletes.
For the sake of the athletes who have worked so hard to get to this global stage, I hope the Olympics can happen this year. Despite the loss in ticket revenue, holding the Summer Games without fans is certainly better than postponing again or canceling them outright.
