New research by Comparethemarketcom.au reveals the average American has encountered heartbreak 2.55 times in their life, taking 13.48 months to heal each time, totaling 2.86 years of upset and hurt. And for those of us in the Southern states, our hearts are hurting.
Out of the states found in the South, West Virginia residents have had to nurse heartache the most, with the average adult going through the devastation 3.29 times and taking 28.19 months to recover from each broken heart, adding up to 7.72 years of their lives. I guess West Virginia isn’t for lovers.

Our neighbors in South Carolina are love suffering for sure. They rank at number 7 on the list with an average of 2.39 in heartbreaks. Mississippi (3.00), and Tennessee (2.96) make up the top three heartbreak states across the region, with residents taking a total of 9.25 and 4.87 years to mend their broken hearts.
At the other end of the ranking, Alabama (1.83), Georgia (1.94), and Louisiana (1.96) residents appear to be affected the least number of times in total, with Alabama locals bouncing back from their heartaches 5.69 years sooner than those in West Virginia.
