Here’s a bonus one for you…August 3rd is the day we all were blessed by “The Princess Diaries.” Yes, thank you 2001 and Anne Hathaway for the quotes like “stay off the grass” we use regularly. This was also her debut film!

Ready for some August 3rd facts? The world is such a strange and somewhat scary place full of history. Every morning I wake up grateful for the day and wonder what strangeness is associated with it. (Yes, I admit I’m a different breed of human) Knowing major historical events is crucial to understanding how we live today. Seeing what happened in the past intrigues me.

You might think I’m ghastly, but I find history fascinating because of the weird and scary things that happen. In this article, we’ll explore five bizarre occurrences that occurred on August 3rd throughout history. So sit back, relax and enjoy the weird and somewhat scary facts in history.

• The Statue Of Liberty Reopens

  On August 3rd of 2004 the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty reopens after being closed since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

• National Watermelon Day!

  It's national watermelon day! Did you know that watermelon is 92% water? The earliest record of watermelon dates all the way back to the B.C. era. Wild! I'm personally not a big fan, but if you'd like to indulge enjoy pick up some watermelon at your local grocery store and get to snacking.

• Grab Some Nuts Day

  Let's get nutty! August 3rd is also known as National Grab Some Nuts Day. Whether they're nuts, legumes, seeds, or drupes - they are all nuts and form some part of our daily diet. A diet rich in nuts and minerals will benefit our health if taken in the correct quantity. During this day, the consumption of all nuts is encouraged. (But please don't if you have a nut allergy of course)
• Strike! Strike! Strike!

  Strikes were happening on the ground. On August 3rd, 1981, U.S. air traffic controllers went on strike. They did this because they wanted better pay and working conditions. 13,000 air traffic controllers walked off the job. Sadly, President Ronald Reagan said they would be fired if they did...and well...they were.

• Mass Shooting in El Paso, Texas

  On August 3rd, 2019 a 21-year old gunman opened fire at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. This was a horrific event that left twenty-three people dead. A man who was wounded in the shooting died in April 2020 after months in the hospital. The gunman was identified as Patrick Crusius. It was reported that he was targeting Mexicans in hopes of scaring Latinos into leaving the U.S.
