National S’mores Day Has Roots In Morrisville, NC
Today, Tuesday, August 10th is National S’mores Day. This favorite campfire snack is celebrated every August as it should be. What is better than a golden brown toasted marshmallow, melted chocolate, and a graham cracker-preferably a cinnamon sugar one! It takes me back to the summers I spent at camp, where every Tuesday night we would find a stick and roast those marshmallows. But did you know where this delectable treat came from?
The first known record of what would later become known as a “S’more” was in A Book of 150 Recipes Prepared with Campfire Marshmallows. The book was first published in 1930. The classic snack is referred to as a “Campfire Graham Cracker Sandwich”. I don’t know about you but I’d love to try the rest of the recipes- the book in its entirety can be viewed at the link above! While this is the first time the recipe was written down, it is believed that it predated this publication. The name began as “Some More” but was later shortened to the term “S’more” which we use today.
We don’t know exactly when National S’mores Day began or who initiated the holiday. Like most food-based celebrations, companies have participated in promotions and deals. Some past participants have included stuffed puffs, Insomnia Cookies, and the Girl Scouts. Morrisville, North Carolina has also taken to celebrating. The town in the past has changed its name to S’Morrisville for the day and has held a S’mores Day event.
