Tuloe was riding his motorcycle because he operates a motorcycle taxi service to help support his family. He dropped out of school in 7th grade to pursue this business, something that is not uncommon in Liberia. That didn't quell the desire to finish his education, something he discussed with the president at their meeting. The president offered him a scholarship to any school in Liberia that can be used up to a Master's level. He also gave the 18-year-old the equivalent of $10,000 as well as two new motorcycles for his business.
The scholarship offered by the Salisbury, NC Livingstone College is just another option for Tuloe once he completes high school. The Liberian Ambassador to the United States plans to meet with Livingstone College president this week to personally thank him for the gesture of generosity.
Livingstone College is a historically black college located in Salisbury, NC. The school has a longstanding history with Liberia that is related to the A.M.E. Zion Church along with the Liberian Organization of The Piedmont (LOP), which is based in Winston-Salem, NC. Through the college's relationship with LOP Livingstone sponsors two students every 4 years. This made offering Tuloe a scholarship the perfect fit for the school.
In addition to the multiple scholarship opportunities, Tuloe also was given cash and other items such as a mattress, with a total value of $1,500 from the business owner the money belonged to. In a world so polarized and full of negative news it's refreshing to see a story of a good samaritan. Hopefully this shows others that doing the right thing can pay off.
