Wednesday it was announced that Wrightsville Beach will receive $11.6 million for beach renourishment. The money comes as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Work Plan for the Disaster Relief and Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2022. The announcement was made by Senators Richard Burr and Thomas Tillis as well as Congressman David Rouzer. Carolina Beach received funding for a similar purpose back in the fall. The goal is to help reverse damage from recent hurricanes and other storms that have impacted the beaches.
But what is this money going to? A quick google search explains beach nourishment as “Beach nourishment, or beach filling, is the practice of adding large quantities of sand or sediment to beaches to combat erosion and increase beach width.” The beaches are an important part of our state so I’m glad this is being prioritized. Hopefully the Wrightsville Beach renourishment will be successful and generations to come can take in the wondrous beauty .
