Looking to beat the heat this weekend? If Lake Norman was on the agenda you may need to rethink. A “NO SWIMMING” advisory has been issued for part of Lake Norman in Cornelius. This comes after an estimated 600 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into a cove. According to a Mecklenburg County official, the spill was due to a damaged pipe on Meta Road in Cornelius. The sewage drained from that pipe into a Lake Norman cove.
The damage was due to directional drilling by a private contractor. At this time the pip has been repaired and the leak stopped. There will be no swimming in that part of Lake Norman until conditions are deemed safe for human contact. The water quality will be monitored by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services until that time.
Rusty Rozzelle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ Water Quality Program Manager, said the advisories are standard procedure. “Since this cove on Lake Norman is used for recreation, it is important to inform residents of the discharge and advise against swimming in the impacted area due to the potential risk to human health,” said Rozzelle.
