It's April so your mind is probably on taxes. Property taxes are rising every year it seems. However, it's not uncommon for cities and states to offer tax breaks to businesses as an incentive for them to come to that location. For years North Carolina offered the film industry tax breaks to make movies here. Sports teams also commonly receive tax breaks as well as large corporations that bring in large numbers of jobs (ie Apple, Amazon, etc.) But one industry that I hadn't thought about receiving the tax breaks is the healthcare industry. But both of the major Charlotte North Carolina area hospitals/hospital systems received some significant property tax breaks this year.

This is due to their tax exempt status being technically non-profit entities. Though with the outrageous costs of healthcare, I find it unlikely that these organizations aren't profiting in one way or another. WFAE reports that both Novant Health and Atrium Health received a $23 million tax break on their Mecklenburg County properties. They also report that the two systems own over $2.4 million worth of property in the county. Think of what that $23 million could do for the county. Do you think North Carolina hospitals should be receiving these tax breaks? Or should they pay up like you and I have to? You can read more about this story here.
