When you talk donuts, you're talking my language. And, Yelp says the best donuts in North Carolina come from a family owned spot in business for nearly 70 years.

Yelp recently turned to their loyal reviewers to put together a list of the best donuts in every state. And, when it comes to North Carolina the title goes to Superior Bakery in Fayetteville.

According to Superior Bakery's website, the brand was founded in 1956 by John S. Poulos, who immigrated from Greece in 1951 and worked as a dishwasher, saving money to purchase a then closed bakery on Raeford Road.

Then, a few years later, he married Kay who joined him in growing the iconic business that relocated to Hope Mills Road in 1971. And, although the couple retired in the late 80s, the bakery is still family owned and operated.

And, in reading reviews for Superior Bakery, it's no surprise they achieved status as best donuts in North Carolina. A recent Yelper applauded owner Nick Poulous as "amazing" and "personable." The reviews rate customer service 10/10.

As far as the baked goods, this reviewer pointed to the Glazed Croissant Donuts that come plain glazed or with filling. They recommend the strawberry filling.

Another note of high praise for the spot named best donuts in North Carolina is for the fried croissants and pineapple upside down cake. So, it's not just donuts at Superior Bakery! There's plenty more to carb up on.

Again, more stories about personable touches with customer service. One reviewer relates a story about waiting in line for an order when a gentleman emerged from the kitchen and handed customers huge honey buns for free.

Customer service goes a long way with me. And, it's kind of rare these days. But, when a family has a passion for their business it shows. So, that's why Superior Bakery is able to thrive for nearly 7 decades.

Friday, June 2 is National Donut Day, and ahead of the celebration, Yelp released its second annual Top 100 US Donut Shops list. And apparently, NC has some delicious donuts. One North Carolina Donut shop was named the second-best in the entire country. The highly praised donuts come to us from Asheville. And 2nd best, that's some high praise. They weren't alone as 5 total North Carolina places made Yelp's list. This includes donuts from Asheville, Fayetteville, and Concord among others.

While my current favorite donut spot, The Salty, didn't make the cut, I'll be sure to check out a couple of these locations. I enjoy a good gourmet donut but I also can't turn down a hot now Krispy Kreme glazed donut. There just might not be anything better! The best donut I've had lately- a butterbeer one from the previously mentioned The Salty. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for my waistline) it was a limited-time offering. So how did Yelp come up with these ratings that ranked a North Carolina Donut Shop 2nd best in the country? According to Yelp, they "identified businesses in the donuts category, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews between January 1st, 2022 and March 31st, 2023."

This is the second time Superior Bakery in Fayetteville has made the top 100 list, though that took a substantial jump this year.
