We all know someone who seems to be the among the pickiest eaters. I'll be the first to admit I'm somewhat of a picky eater. I've certainly gotten better as I've gotten older, but there are still plenty of things I won't eat. That being said I'm not the person who is only ordering chicken fingers at a restaurant by a longshot. I did find it interesting, as someone born and raised in North Carolina, that one of the cities with the pickiest eaters in the country is right here in NC.

This is according to a new report shared with us by our friends at Home Run Inn, one of the nation’s leading frozen pizza brands. To determine these rankings they conducted a study of more than 2000 participants across the country.

Google search volume was also used in this analysis with the goal to determine search interest for picky eating habits. Included search terms included those related to picky eating, meal ideas for picky eaters, and ways to overcome picky eating.

Those search terms were then analyzed across all 50 states and cities with a population of at least 250,000.

Ultimately the following determination was made for the cities with the pickiest eaters:

  1. St. Louis, MO
  2. Jersey City, NJ
  3. Cincinnati, OH
  4. Winston-Salem, NC
  5. Fort Wayne, IN

A few other North Carolina cities made the pickiest eaters top 50 list including Durham (21), Greensboro (23), and Raleigh (45). The Queen City was noticeably absent.

Another interesting statistic (and one that makes me feel better about myself) is that according to Home Run Inn’s nationwide survey, 50% of Americans consider themselves picky eaters.

They also shared with us some other highlights from this story:

  • Among picky eaters, one-third are embarrassed about their picky eating habits
  • 54% often hide their picky eating habits while dining with others
  • 45% have never attempted to overcome their picky eating habits
  • Picky Preferences: (57%) dislike vegetables, followed by seafood (56%), meat (39%), spices and seasonings (34%), and pork (33%)
  • 65% say their picky eating habits started in childhood
  • Among all respondents, one in five say they would not date a picky eater

I was also interested to learn that something that is a big turn-off for me, is also for a lot of other people. It's almost always the texture of foods that I do not care for. And it turns out a lot of other people feel the same way. 84% are against "slimy foods" with others not caring for "anything mushy (54%), gelatinous or jelly-like (40%), or gooey and sticky (39%)".

Thanks to our friends at Home Run Inn for sharing their research with us. You can view the full study here.
