Hockey has really grown in North Carolina, largely fueled by the Carolina Hurricanes success. Playing for the Hurricanes means being part of a team that is built on hard work, intensity, and a relentless forechecking system. The new guys learn about the five-man unit style of play and apply constant pressure to force the other team into mistakes. A player's role is defined by putting the team first and keeping the locker room tight-knit. With this style of play in mind, let's take a look at some Canes scoring records.
Single-Game Goalscoring Record
Grant Halverson/Getty ImagesThe record for most single-game goals is four and it was achieved by Jordy Douglas, Ron Francis, and Eric Staal. Douglas achieved this as a member of the Hartford Whalers, on Feb. 3, 1980, at home, against the New York Islanders. He was drafted 81st overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft, but he decided to sign with the New England Whalers instead. Douglas eventually played with Hartford and scored 33 goals in his first season with them. His career was hampered by injuries, including a broken collarbone, during his first season with the Whalers.
Francis also achieved his four goal game as a member of the Whalers and it was on Feb. 12, 1984, at home, against the Edmonton Oilers. He was a legendary player and a two-time Stanley Cup champion. Francis was known for his exceptional playmaking, high-scoring career, and a gentleman of the game.
Staal achieved this as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes, on March 7, 2009, on the road, against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was a celebrated former player and led the Canes to their first Stanley Cup win in 2006. Staal was a member of the Triple Gold Club, which means he has won an Olympic Gold medal, a World Championship gold, and a Stanley Cup. He is the oldest of the four Staal brothers, who all played in the NHL. Finally, his No. 12 jersey was retired by the team in 2025 and it cemented his legacy as one of the Hurricanes' best players.
Single-Season Goalscoring Record
The single-season goalscoring record belongs to Blaine Stoughton, and he in fact holds the top two spots on the list. He scored 56 goals for Hartford in the 1979-80 season and 52 goals in the 1981-82. Stoughton was a solid goalscorer and his 56 goals in the 1979-80 season led the NHL. He won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophy that season and he scored at least 40 goals in four straight seasons for the Whalers.
In third place on the list is Geoff Sanderson, who scored 46 goals, in 82 games, in the 1992-93 season. He was known for a long NHL career as a winger. Sanderson was a two-time NHL All-Star and achieved some impressive milestones, including over 700 points and a gold medal at the World Championship.
Career Goalscoring Record

More fun facts about Francis is that he is also the franchise leader in games played and points, and a notable figure that stayed with the team through their relocation from Hartford to Raleigh. He always had a high-level of production and success as a team leader. Francis was the gold standard for being great on offense for the franchise.
Second place goes to Staal, who had 322 goals for the franchise. More fun facts about him is that he was the second overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and he was named the captain of the Hurricanes in 2010. In over 18 seasons, he recorded over 1,000 career points and was a six-time NHL All-Star.
Third place goes to Sebastian Aho, who scored 283 goals for the franchise. He was a highly skilled hockey player, known for his two-way play, speed, and offensive talent. Aho performed well in clutch moments and playoff situations. He was a high draft pick and one of the best centers in the league.
The Hurricanes' goalscoring records showcased a mix of legendary players, single-season dynamos, and explosive team efforts. The top spots were dominated by some of the franchise's all-time greatest players. There were also some seasonal and game-level records that featured both familiar names and blasts from the past.
These records told the story of the evolution of three different teams. The numbers connected the explosive scoring of the Hartford Whalers era to the more structured offenses of the Hurricanes. The record books are a testament to the franchise's offensive talent as it was across a few different decades. Overall, the different named franchises had a diverse mix of skill sets and levels of physicality. The Hurricanes will look to keep the offensive outbursts going in Carolina.
