Marriott Reveals Plans to Temporarily Lay Off Tens of Thousands of Workers
This is just a shame and I truly feel for the individuals and their families who will be impacted.
With travel restrictions and social distancing efforts causing a dramatic plummet in hotel bookings, Marriott International has announced it’s temporarily releasing tens of thousands of workers until the coronavirus pandemic is under control. Marriott International Inc., the world’s largest hotel companies world-wide.
“We are experiencing significant drops in demand at properties globally with an uncertain duration,” the world’s largest hotel chain said in a statement released Tuesday. “We are adjusting global operations accordingly which has meant either reduction in hours or a temporary leave for many of our associates at our properties.” While furloughed employees won’t be paid, they’ll continue to receive health benefits during their unscheduled break, hotel officials say.

He applied for unemployment; they called to check his employment status.
Marriott HR says he’s NOT laid off but on a ZERO hour schedule. So he can’t qualify for unemployment NOR does he have health insurance.
About one-fourth of Marriott’s hotels have been shuttered since the coronavirus emerged, including most of the company’s properties in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau, says CEO Arne Sorenson. The company didn’t offer a timeline for the temporary layoffs but we are sad to see this happening.
