REAL-ID Deadline Pushed Back To 2023
Good news for anyone who has procrastinated getting a REAL-ID. The requirement to have one to fly or enter a federal building has been pushed back to May 2023.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a press release yesterday announcing the extension. The previous extension had pushed the date back to September of 2021. The new date gives people an additional 11 months to obtain the ID.
The change comes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and DMV’s across the country still operating at limited capacity.
“Protecting the health, safety, and security of our communities is our top priority,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. “As our country continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, extending the REAL ID full enforcement deadline will give states needed time to reopen their driver’s licensing operations and ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card.”
Currently, only 45% of American’s have a REAL-ID. Any newly issued ID will be compliant with the guidelines. The ID will be required for anyone 18 and older to board any domestic flights. Passports and military identification cards will be acceptable alternatives.
Older IDs will still be valid for things like purchasing liquor, driving, purchasing tobacco products, and gambling.
How To Get A REAL-ID in NC
You will need to visit a DMV office by appointment or walk-in. You are not able to do this online.
Bring the following documents with you:
- One (1) document with full name confirming identity and date of birth.
- One (1) document with full name confirming social security number.
- Two (2) documents with current physical address confirming North Carolina residency.
- For non-U.S. citizens, one (1) document (with full name) proving legal presence/lawful status
- If applicable, one (1) or more documents verifying any name change
