Biden Administration is Seeking to Ban on Menthol Cigarettes
The Biden administration is expected to announce this week that it will propose a ban on menthol cigarettes. The proposed ban on mint-flavored cigarettes is said to be announced today ( 4/29 Thursday) according to an administration official.
This proposed menthol ban would include preventing menthol-flavored cigarettes as well as manufactured cigars and cigarillos to be sold and produced. According to the Wall Street Journal, The FDA must respond in court by Thursday to a citizens’ petition to ban menthols by disclosing whether the agency intends to pursue such a policy.
Now don’t start freaking out yet if you are a smoker, because this could take years before a ban like this would take effect. This announcement is most likely going to be heavily supported by many anti-smoking organizations to curb the use of tobacco. According to the FDA, approximately 20 million Americans smoke menthol cigarettes.
New: @ACLU warns Biden admin a menthol cigarette ban will have “serious racial justice implications.” The letter cites Eric Garner, Michael Brown & George Floyd and says ban will “lead to unconstitutional policing” & ‘trigger criminal penalties.”
