ABC News is now reporting that at least nineteen children and two adults are dead after a school shooting in South Texas yesterday.
State police say the shooter, after turning a gun on his grandmother, drove to Robb Elementary in Uvalde [[yoo-VAHL-dee]], abandoned his car, and went into the school where he opened fire. He was reportedly shot and killed by police.
While investigators try and make sense of what happened and work to identify those lost, the shooter’s grandmother is in critical condition after being shot before the mass shooting at an elementary school in south Texas.
- In the wake of the incident, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy railed against those who he says were elected and have done “nothing” to stop gun violence. Speaking on the Senate floor, Murphy asked “why are we here” if not to do something about the problem of mass shootings in America.
- President Biden also addressed the nation directly last night. In a televised statement, Biden said he feels for the parents of the dead children. He asked all Americans to pray for all those affected. He then asked, “When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?” He said he has been pushing for gun legislation for his entire career. He added “we have to do more.” Biden urged politicians to act right now.
Sen. Chris Murphy delivers remarks on Uvalde, Texas elementary school shooting: “What are we doing? What are we doing?…This only happens in this country and nowhere else. Nowhere else do little kids go to school thinking that they might be shot that day." https://t.co/Zh3OvUaIwm pic.twitter.com/TjJVoaFbRN
