Confederate Flag or Biracial Child? Court Says A Woman Must Choose
Judge Rules Woman Must Choose Her Confederate Flag Or Her Biracial Child
A judge has ruled that an Albany, New York mother must remove a rock painted with a confederate flag from her driveway. The court says it poses a threat to the well-being of her biracial child. Justice Stanley Pritzker has ruled in a 5-0 decision that the rock should be removed by June 1st. If not it could be a factor, “into any future best interests analysis,” as it pertains to the child.
The mother, Christie BB, per the court, says she’s never used racial slurs around her child or at all. However, the judge declared the rock as “a symbol inflaming the already strained relationship between the parties.” The child’s law guardian Jason Leifer told The Times-Union he was in favor of the court’s ruling. He is not, however, sure if the rock belongs to the mother.
“What’s going to have to happen is this — if the issue is raised the court will need to hear evidence of the child how the child’s well-being is negatively affected by a parent’s views and opinions,” said Leifer.
What are your thoughts on displaying racial symbols around children? Should the display of such material be up to the parents? Or should the law get involved if it impacts a child’s well-being?
