45 North Carolina Middle School Students Mysteriously Ill At School
45 Students at a North Carolina Middle School became mysteriously ill on Monday during the school day according to WXII. The students attend Starmount Middle School in Boonville, NC. Boonville is in Yadkin County, NC. The reason for the sudden illnesses is currently unknown. The students impacted were all in the 6th grade and reported symptoms of nausea, headaches, and throwing up.
Once the extent of the issue was discovered, a shelter in place was issued to avoid contact between students affected and those unaffected by the illness. “I understand parents were nervous and upset. No messaging went out [from the school] because I can tell you, I saw first hand, administration and front office staff were focused on helping students. That’s first priority,” Yadkin County Schools Superintendent Todd Martin said as reported by WRAL.
First responders were deployed to Starmount to examine and assist the ill students. The Yadkin County Health Department along with the school district are investigating what caused the students to become mysteriously ill. Some suspected the cause may have been a CO leak but that was found to not be the case. Food poisoning is also being looked into but has yet to be confirmed.
