Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools To Return To School Despite Covid Surge
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are set to return to school this week despite the surge of covid cases according to a call that went out Sunday night. Monday, January 3rd is a teacher workday but students will return to the classroom Tuesday, January 4th. Meck County health officials are supportive of the district’s decision.
Students will still be required to wear masks at school regardless of their vaccination status. Former Mecklenburg County Health Director Gibbie Harris still encourages parents to keep their kids home if they are sick. “If you are ill, and you have symptoms that you think may be related to COVID or that you’ve been exposed to somebody with COVID — please try to get tested,” she said in a press conference. Sunday night’s call to parents from CMS also reiterated that message.
On December 30th the state updated its guidelines for schools to align with the new CDC guidance. Anyone who tests positive, but does not have symptoms, can return to the classroom in five days as long as they remain masked at all times. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will follow the covid toolkit released by the state.
