South Carolina Shellfish Harvesting Season Opening October 1
Are you a fan of shellfish? Shellfish is broken down into two groups: crustaceans and mollusks/bivalves. Within these groups are a variety of foods including (but not limited to) shrimp, prawns, oysters, crab, lobster, mussels, and more. Yeah, just listing those made me hungry. The shellfish harvest season is gearing up to begin in South Carolina on October 1, 2022.
WCBD News 2 in Charleston reports that the 2022-2023 shellfish harvesting season will resume half-hour before sunrise on October 1. That Saturday is your chance to kick off the harvest for some of your favorite seafood. As a South Carolina girl, I know what some of the best seafood tastes like. If it is one thing you can enjoy when you are down in the Lowcountry especially, it’s some great seafood.
According to News 2, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says if a hurricane or natural disaster occurs then shellfish beds may close temporarily. If you are planning to harvest in South Carolina, you should check with SCDHEC beforehand. There are about 20 public shellfish grounds and 7 state shellfish grounds for recreational gatherings. Harvest season will run through May 15, 2023, depending upon conditions. Do you plan to partake in harvesting season?
