During the Franco-Mexican War, Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday commemorating the date when the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla. This occurred on May 5, 1862. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.
