This Local Landmark Was Named The Most Underrated Attraction In North Carolina

Even if you live in North Carolina you’ve probably been to several of the state’s top tourist destinations. Places that instantly come to my mind include Biltmore Estate, the Battleship North Carolina, Cape Fear Lighthouse, the North Carolina Zoo, Wright Brothers Memorial, and others. Even locally in Charlotte, I’d say Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bank of America Stadium, Carowinds, or the White Water Center. These are all popular and heavily visited attractions. But what about those spots that are off the beaten path? Well, the experts at Yahoo put together a list of the most underrated attraction in each state including North Carolina.

And that spot, it’s very close by. In fact, a quick google search tells me that the most underrated attraction in North Carolina is a quick 18-minute drive from where I sit writing this article. Yet, I’ve never been there. In fact, I’d never even heard of it until I stumbled across this list the other day. And it’s not somewhere I’d even go out of my way to see. If I was there I’d probably take a look from my car and move on. So needless to say I do not agree with Yahoo on this. I’m not sure how this determination was made, because most of the other attractions for different states are well, more of an “attraction”. This is a piece of art. What did they pick?   • North Carolina

    I’ve lived in Charlotte for most of my life and I’ve never seen this one. The sculpture created by Czech sculptor David Černý is located at Whitehall Technology Park.  It’s a 14-ton giant head made of rotating layers of stainless steel and does surprisingly have some Instagram posts of it. Would I tell you to visit this over other Charlotte attractions such as Bank of America Stadium, Carowinds, or the White Water Center? Yeah, that’s a no from me. But people at Yahoo say it’s worth a visit. So if visiting an office park is on your bucket list I guess hit this one up.

  • South Carolina

    I have to say I’m much more impressed by South Carolina’s underrated attraction than I am North Carolina’s. I would classify this as underrated as I haven’t heard of it before. It’s the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden in Benettsville, which Yahoo describes as a “work of art”. I often drive through Bennetsville on my way to Myrtle Beach. Perhaps if I’m not in a hurry to get back one weekend I’ll make a stop! The garden was composed of plants mainly from local nursery’s and the reason it was created? Simply to win the title of “Yard of the Month”. I think it wins yard of the century!

  • Virginia

    If you find yourself driving through Virginia it’s worth stopping at the Luray Caverns. They are located in Luray Virginia which is outside of Washington, DC. While Yahoo says its underrated it is one of the most popular cavern destinations according to the attraction’s website. One of the most interesting features that some visitors aren’t aware of? The Stalacpipes Organ. Yahoo says, “it’s the world’s largest musical instrument and it makes all those stalactites “sing” by gently tapping them.”

  • Tennessee

    Tennessee is also home to a geological wonder that’s underrated. This time it’s Ruby Falls an underground waterfall. I didn’t even know that was possible! It’s located literally underneath the city of Chattanooga. Visitors will descend 260 feet by glass-front elevator* to see ancient cave formations along the cavern trail to the thundering waterfall. Now this seems like a must visit for sure!

  • Georgia

    You don’t have to go all the way to Arizona to experience a grand canyon. This one the Little Grand Canyon is 150-deep gulleys in Providence Canyon State Park. And it’s not naturally occurring it was actually the result of poor agricultural management in the early 1800s.

  • Florida

    Who needs Disney or Universal when you could visit the Bok Tower Gardens? While I’m sure this is spectacular I’d still rather visit the theme parks. But if nature is more your speed and you find yourself in central Florida give this a visit. According to Yahoo, the gardens are ” considered one of the greatest works of Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., and are open 365 days a year. Yet the most remarkable sight is the 205-foot-tall Singing Tower, which houses one of the world’s finest carillons.”
