North Carolina Minor League Ballpark Wins 2022 Ballpark Of The Year Title
DENVER, CO - AUGUST 23: German Marquez #48 of the Colorado Rockies delivers a pitch to home plate against Meibrys Viloria #60 of the Texas Rangers as the sun sets behind the stadium in the fifth inning at Coors Field on August 23, 2022 in Denver, Colorado.
Atrium Health Ballpark (AHB) was recently recognized as Ballpark Digest’s 2022 Ballpark of the Year. AHB is home to the Kannapolis Cannonballers the city’s Minor League team, a Single-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Ballpark of The Year honor is given to the best major and minor league venues across the country.
According to a press release by the team, the Atrium Health Ballpark was designed to be one of the primary anchors in the City’s Downtown Revitalization Project.
“I can speak for our management team and city council that there are few opportunities in our careers to see something transform the way the downtown has so far. It’s pretty unique. One of the most satisfying things is seeing folks who have lived here for generations support our plans, get excited, and actually see the whole project completed. They can touch it and feel it and it’s a rare and special thing to have the positive support and reaction from so many of our citizens,” commented Kannapolis City Manager Mike Legg. “We are honored to be recognized by Ballpark Digest. National recognition for our vision and hard work is a really special achievement for us.”

AHB features grass berms, a home run porch, and other amenities that are open and accessible as a public park to citizens year-round. The park’s right field acts as an extension of the main street development. The park is open from dawn to dusk daily for use as a public amenity. Atrium Health Ballpark says that they annually host more than 200,000 non-gameday visitors. In 2022 the team saw a gameday attendance uptick of more than 10 percent. More than 180,000 fans came to enjoy America’s pastime.
Congratulations to our friends at Atrium Health Ballpark and the Kannapolis Cannonballers. Guess I’ll have to venture up I-85 and catch a game this spring.
Do You Know Every North Carolina Minor League Baseball Team?
Baseball is widely regarded as America’s pastime. Without a major league team closer than Atlanta or DC minor league baseball takes the stage in North Carolina. So it’s a good thing that we have plenty of North Carolina minor league baseball teams to be a fan of! It can seem like there are so many teams that it’s hard to make sense of what they all mean. It seems like every town has a baseball team. Are they all the same level?
The short answer is no. Minor league baseball is made up of several different levels. These are used for player development and getting players ready to hopefully one day compete in the “big leagues”. Each major league team has 4 minor league teams affiliated with them for a total of 120 teams in the country. Additionally, there are other independent baseball leagues that players can play in and fans can take in games.
Minor league baseball can be a fun and relatively inexpensive outing for families and friend groups alike. Most tickets are very affordable with fun promotions as well as food and drink specials. North Carolina is home to 10 official minor league teams in the triple A, high A, and single A levels. We also have 5 independent baseball teams. Keep reading to learn a little about each of the teams, where they are located, their major league affiliate, and their level!
