The North Carolina Must Try “Local Delicacy” Is Not BBQ
Every state has its must-try foods. Think Philly cheesestake, NY Pizza, Tex-Mex, and that Louisiana Gumbo. When you think North Carolina and a must-try local delicacy you probably think BBQ right? It has to be either Eastern or Western NC BBQ? Well, not according to our friends at Insure and Go. They recently conducted research using TikTok hashtag data to reveal the essential eats for visitors in different countries around the world as well as in each US state and shared their research with us.
Nationally the best “local delicacy” in the United States is a hot dog. I’m slightly embarrassed by that admittedly I do not eat hotdogs. When you can’t tell me exactly what it is that’s where I draw the line. But I do know many people love a good hot dog. And I can see how it makes the list. But there isn’t anything else that can represent the United States. But what about North Carolina? I’ve already spoiled that it isn’t the North Carolina must-try local delicacy is not the famous BBQ. But it is something that often accompanies BBQ.
Any guesses? It’s hushpuppies! This southern side is thick cornmeal batter that is fried. They are often served with BBQ or fried seafood. What about some of the other states? South Carolina’s is more what I would expect- Shrimp and Grits. Philly Cheesesteak did take the crown in Pennsylvania. Florida was a favorite of mine (that I just had in Florida over the weekend) Key Lime Pie. Another highlight was Kentucky, it’s not a food- it’s Bourbon.
What would you say North Carolina’s must-try local delicacy is? My vote would go to the aforementioned BBQ. Thanks to our friends at Insure and Go for sharing their research with us. Read the full study here.
