South Carolina Ranked The 3rd Worst State To Have A Baby
Having a baby is a joyous occasion and one many individuals look forward to their entire lives. But the cost of simply giving birth can be a financial burden. But how much of a financial burden can vary greatly depending upon where (location-wise) you’re giving birth. And on a list of the best and worst places to give birth, South Carolina ranked as the 3rd worst state to have a baby.
South Carolina Worst State To Have A Baby
This is according to a new study conducted by and shared with us by our friends at WalletHub. They report that with insurance new parents pay more than $2,600 for a birth, and without insurance that can be around $15,000. That is absolutely absurd in my opinion.
So if you have an option, you may want to try to give birth in a state that won’t hurt your wallet as badly as others. Additionally, you want to consider other factors besides just cost when it comes to the best or worst state to give birth. Some locations provide better quality health care services in addition to more supportive environments for those children to grow up in.
To create this ranking, WalletHub “compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 31 key measures of cost and health care accessibility, as well as baby- and family-friendliness. Our data set ranges from conventional delivery charges at hospitals to average annual infant-care costs to the number of pediatricians per capita.”
And out of those 51 states (and DC), South Carolina ranked 49th making it the third worst state to have a baby. The Palmetto state’s worst score came in “baby-friendliness”. North Carolina fared a little better, but not great by any means, ranking 36th overall.
The best states to give birth? Massachusetts, North Dakota, and Minnesota. Thanks to our friends at WalletHub for sharing their research with us. You can read the full study and methodology here.
