This Small North Carolina Town’s Coastal Ghost Tour Is The Best On The East Coast
One of my absolute favorite things to do when visiting a new city (or even an old favorite) is to take a ghost tour. You may be under the impression that it’s just certain cities that offer these haunted tours based in historical truths. Ghost tours are synonymous with cities like Savannah Georgia. But many many cities around the country have them as well. Even Charlotte! Another North Carolina ghost tour was actually included in a list of the best on the East Coast. And perhaps not where you’d expect!
This list was created by Eastern Home & Travel. It includes sites across the East Coast including St. Augustine, FL, the aforementioned Savannah, Williamsburg, VA, and more. But also included on the list? The small town of Beaufort North Carolina!
10 Best East Coast Ghost Tours
- St Augustine, FL (St. Augustine Lighthouse’s Dark of the Moon Ghost Tour)
- Savannah, GA (Old Savannah Tours)
- Charleston, SC (Bulldog Tours)
- Beaufort, NC (Beaufort Ghost Walk)
- Williamsburg, VA (The Colonial Ghost Tour)
- Gettysburg, PA (Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking Tour)
- Philadelphia, PA (Terror Behind The Walls)
- New York, NY (Ghosts of Greenwich Village)
- Sleepy Hollow, NY (Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted House)
- Salem, MA (Spellbound Tour)
You can see there is a wide variety of locations on this list. Some are steeped and make perfect sense- like Salem with the harrowing past involved the Salem Witch Trials. The bloody history at Gettysburg is sure to lead to some hauntings as well. New York City? That one wasn’t on my short list!
The Beaufort Ghost Walk, is a 1 hour and 15 minute walking tour of the coastal town of Beaufort. While on this spooky adventure, guests learn all about the 300-year history of the town including stories of “betrayal, treachery, and tragedy from the Golden Age of Piracy, Colonial and Civil War eras, or the early 1900s.” Sounds spooky and fun! These 9 North Carolina Cities Offer Ghost Tours Featuring Their Haunted History
When you think of haunted cities where do you think of first? From what I’ve heard there is a bit of a rivalry between Savannah and New Orleans as to what is truly the most haunted city in America. But if you believe in such things, you can find a little bit of spooky, haunted history, in almost every city in the US. And that means here in North Carolina there are some haunted stories as well. In fact, while you may have never known there are numerous cities in North Carolina that offer ghost tours and other spooky adventures.
North Carolina Ghost Tours
And with Halloween fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to start planning. Places like Scarowinds and haunted trails can be fun for sure. But to me, there is something more ominous about listening to true stories while wandering dark streets blissfully unaware of what could be around you, than walking through a crowded man-made haunted attraction. Knowing someone is trying to scare me, I’m expecting it. Plus there are countless other people in the same place, and often times they are more gorey than eerie. I’m more scared walking through the parking deck at work (for real though) at night than I am at a haunted house. So it’s no surprise ghost tours are my preferred scary attraction.
Believe it or not, I’m not 100% sold on the existence of paranormal activity. I’ve heard stories and seen video (thanks to my dad watching Ghost Hunters back in the day), that certainly makes me wonder. But despite having gone on a number of ghost tours in cities like Savannah, Charleston, Williamsburg, and Boston among others I’ve never witnessed anything to make me a true believer. But the stories, the history, and that element of the unknown keep me fascinated and always looking for my next ghost tour. So no matter what North Carolina city you find yourself in this fall season, check out one of these haunted history tours. Below are 9 different cities in the state that offer ghost tours, some have only one option, and others have numerous. Have you done any of these? I’d love to hear about it and your recommendations! Happy haunts!
