My grandparents used to refer to those doing well financially as living ‘high on the hog.’ Apparently, that could be said for this Horry County spot named one of the richest cities in South Carolina.

According to The Sun News, Briarcliffe Acres, between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach is among the top 10 richest cities in South Carolina.
We are at the beach just about every other weekend with our friends who have a condo very near this spot. However, in all the times we’ve driven past it, I never thought it might be as exclusive as it apparently is.

Census reports from 2022 indicate Briarcliffe Acres has a population just under 500. And, the mean household income is around $130,000 plus. Ok, so that sounds modestly comfortable. But, just wait.
The homes in the area of one of the richest cities in South Carolina sell for as much as $2.5 million. And, the median home price hovers around $700,000.
And, that data puts Briarcliffe Acres at number 4 on MSN.com’s richest cities in South Carolina for 2024. So, yes, behind that unassuming sign at the entrance just off Highway 17 there’s luxurious amenities I can only dream of.
According to an online account of Briarcliffe Acres, the town has quite a storied history of which I will spare every little detail. But, the area has claimed some very influential folks as its residents.
Among the people who have chosen to call Briarcliffe Acres home over the years are Air Force heroes including Col. Francis ‘Gabby’ Gabreski, the first pilot to be an “ace” in two wars.
And, another resident over the years was a retiree from General Motors named Rolf Bierens who participated in designing the automatic transmission.
So, all this time I thought Briarcliff Acres was just another subdivision at the beach. In reality, it is a town with a mayor and 4 member town council. And, it’s just minutes away from all the dining and shopping at Barefoot Landing, while keeping its private and quaint feel.
