Old School In All The Right Way
This past weekend brought a golfing joy to my life I’d been looking forward to for some time. The Carolina Golf Association’s annual “Father/Son Tournament” is easily the largest of its kind anywhere in the state.
Any time I get to play, much less compete with, my son is time spent in a dream for me…and it wouldn’t matter if we were playing on the worst course in America.
However, this occassion was held on one of my favorite golf courses in the world, Mid-Pines.
Pinehurst #2 is generally regarded as famed architect, Donald Ross’ “masterpiece.”
And it’s magnificent.
It’s held countless major championships including 3 US Opens and a US Women’s Open in the last 20 years, plus this year’s USGA Amateur (coming in August).
That being said…it’s been altered over the years (although beautifully restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw). Mid-Pines is the same as when it opened in 1921. It is a “pure” Donald Ross design and course.
In my opinion, it is “old school” in all the right ways.
Mid Pines is ranked in the Top 25 of Golfweek’s “Top 100 Courses in the USA” and is the #2 course in North Carolina. And if you love golf, you MUST play Mid-Pines.
