CHARLESTON, SC - JULY 15: Tourists walk through the historic district on July 15, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina. If you’re like me it seems like you’re always on the go. You jump from one day to the next in a whirlwind combining jobs, responsibilities and hopefully some down time at the end of the day. But, one thing is certain. No matter where you go or how you get there, travel can be hectic. However, wouldn’t it be nice to stop, slow down and smell the roses? So, TravelAwaits.com polled readers to find the nation’s most walkable cities. And, the South Carolina city of Charleston made their list.
The publication points out that in addition to being good exercise, walking allows for more thoughtful exploration in communities and neighborhoods. Travel Awaits recently published the list of 12 most walkable cities. And, Charleston landed at number 9. Some of the charm of Charleston that helped them make the list surrounds the historic district. The article highlights attractions to see on foot including old church steeples to “rainbow row.” That refers to the beautiful and colorfully painted houses.
And, we visited Charleston many times. I love the horse drawn carriage tours. Technically, you’re not doing the walking. But, you get a glimpse into historic Charleston. And, the guides provide stories of the rich past of the city. Of course, there’s no shortage of shopping and art. And, the food in Charleston is to die for. It’s the first place I ever had Shrimp & Grits. Also, my most recent recommendation is Burwell’s. Trust me. It’s incredible. And, the ghost tours are on point. Our first trip to Charleston included a visit to the historic Provost Dungeon.
According to the Travel Awaits list, readers found favorite walkable cities all around the country including spots in Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. But, see for yourself and plan your next trip. So, check out the full list. And, find out more about the South Carolina city of Charleston that made the top 10.
South Carolina Vacation Destination Named No. 1 Beach Town For Food Lovers
Oh, how I regret even writing this list. Now all I can think about is a beach vacation, waterfront dining, and a frozen cocktail. And technically if I left now I could have that by lunchtime. As the weather gets warmer if you’re like me you are dreaming about that beach vacation. And if restaurants are some of the most important decisions you make on a trip, you’ll want to keep reading. I recently came across a list by The Kitchn called America’s Best Beach Towns for Food Lovers. And if that isn’t enough, the number one beach town for food lovers is right here in the Carolinas.
I’ll be honest with you I expected it to be a different place. Now one important distinction is that these are beach towns. So while Charleston often ranks high on these lists, it did not qualify for this one. Though the food there is nothing short of spectacular. Think more of small beach communities. As someone who grew up going to the beach in the vicinity of Myrtle Beach, I was a little surprised Calabash, NC was not included on this list. Calabash seafood is famous, and there is no shortage of restaurants in the tiny town. But the South Carolina destination that The Kitchn named the best beach town for food lovers? I’d wager every person in the Carolinas came name at least one restaurant there. I know you’ve seen the t-shirts. I’ve never been to this town or the restaurant, but I have one. Think you know what it is? Keep reading to see the top 10 beach towns for food lovers. And if you need me, I’ll be finding something better than what I packed this morning to have for lunch.
