When you think of alligators, you might think they are the most common in states like Louisiana or Florida. You would be right about that. Those of us that live in the Carolinas know, we have plenty of them on the coast. Here is where the biggest alligator in North Carolina was found.
North Carolina is as far north as alligators will go as a rule. They do inhabit the southeastern corner of North Carolina and the Outer Banks. My sister lives in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, and alligators are very common along the Brunswick islands. She lives in a neighborhood with several ponds and they are commonly seen there. The average size of an alligator is around 10 feet weighing around 450 pounds.
According to A-Z Animals, there are around 100,000 alligators in South Carolina where the population in North Carolina is far less at around 1,000. Personally, I think that number is low. According to the website,” The largest alligator ever found in North Carolina was a 635-pound alligator that was hit by a car in Manns Harbor in May 2014.”.
Another large alligator was found in Jacksonville and a whopping 12 feet long. The alligator was not caught by a hunting party. He met his demise after attacking and killing a woman’s dog. The dog was reportedly an 80-pound husky. It reportedly happened at the Brooks Gruber Bridge in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The Jacksonville police department was called and chose to put the alligator down. They reportedly felt due to his size and proximity to humans he could not be relocated.
